After watching "The Bourne Supremacy" on cable and then "The Bourne Ultimatum" in the theater opening weekend, I got to thinking, "Wow, it must really suck to have Jason Bourne as your friend." So I decided to make a movie about it. This is my first short in more than three years, and I definitely felt a little rusty while calling the shots and cutting the project in post.
Mark Landry is an old friend of mine from film school, and he was absolutely PRICELESS during, before, and after the shoot. It was his idea to shoot handheld, to mimic the feel of the "Bourne" movies. We also shot only with available light, so you should definitely be impressed with some of the shots he found and the angles he chose. Mark, you rock.
Randall is one of my favorite comedic actors to work with. I'm surprised he's not more famous than he is, but I guess it works out for me because he's still willing to act in stuff for free! Kate is a very funny, memorable actor who I met when she was a recurring character on "Four Kings," and I was so glad when I e-mailed her 2 days before shooting and she was willing to play along. Alex Quijano was a great find who actually came to me through my old friend Leslie Woo from Chicago, who now works in casting here in LA. I'd written the short with 3 parts but couldn't find a third actor who was available on a Saturday, and when I called Leslie she immediately started making call. Leslie saved my ass on this one.
Astute viewers of my work will notice several similarities between this and my other shorts:
1. It's the same room we shot "Generation Gap" in, but dressed differently. The mantle gives this away.
2. The "video game music" I laid in for the Wii that's being played at the top of the scene is the music from "I Hate Cheese." I needed to lay some kind of sound under that, and this seemed to work pretty well when I tried it out.
3. This is the 3rd short I've made that involves somebody getting hurt at the end. Apparently that's my wheelhouse.
Many thanks to everybody at Cherry Sky Films for letting me borrow their camera equipment, and to James Lu for helping me solve my post production problems in Final Cut Pro. Also a big shout out to Carmelo from the "Psych" post-production department for helping with some sound FX. I think it's a fun little movie, so hopefully it'll stay that way long after we've all forgotten about the "Bourne" movies.
